During our second blizzard of the week, I figured I'd be more productive than the one we had three days ago. Years ago, when I was in community college, I would spend my time between class and work at the local thrift stores buying up inventory for my store. Over the years I bought a lot and I sold a lot of the good stuff, as I realized the my dream may never come into fruition and I needed to money to buy more clothes and gin and tonics.
I had three big rubbermade containers up in my parent's attic I brought down today. I thought that it was going to be a lot of junk, as when I was younger I didn't have a clear vision of what I would like to sell in my store. Basically I bought a lot of 70s polyester shirts. And while there are cool ones out there, with really good patterns and colors, it's not what I want to base my product plan around.
Well I have to say, I am pretty happy with what the 19 year old me bought. Yeah, there was some polyester. But for the most part they were keepers, except for this hideous zip-up, red with blue and yellow confetti print dress. With a lace trimmed color. It would be good for a clown's wife costume, but that is about it. So if someone comes into the shop and asks for something that would be appropriate for a clown's wife, I will be out of a sale. But I am okay with that. It went in the donation bag.
I found a few great dresses in my boxes. One awesome black cocktail dress from the
60s, with a great ruffle neckline that continues down the chest slightly and the best part... pockets. I love a dress with pockets. (Side note- I did try on this dress in hopes that it fit me but my hips are little too big and I'm a little too tall. Two things that probably aren't going to change.) There were other great things- swimsuits, lots of tops, a few sweaters, even some men's stuff. I really would like to have a solid men's sections in the shop, so I was pleased with what I had picked up.
I took this opportunity today to consolidate some vintage goodies while I was at it. I had a lot laying around my room, the spare room, the basement (even my boyfriend's apartment, but that's stuff I will have to gather another day- he will be happy to get it out of his way). As I was taking a basketful of clothes out of the basement, I had a little tumble that sent everything flying, including this gorgeous white fur muff. Luckily I, along with the muff, survived. My doting pit bull, Sugar, heard me fall and came to my rescue with kisses. And that is why they were known as the nanny dog for so long in Britain. But that's a whole different blog.
